My Blogging Tips On My One Year Blog Birthday!

How can it be my ‘One Year Blog Birthday’ already? Just where did that year go? I can’t believe that I pressed publish on my very first blog post on 11th February 2017 – one year ago today. With that in mind I thought  today would be a good opportunity to share a bit about my experience and some blogging tips from my first twelve months in action.

What a year it has been. The biggest surprise to me was that I won Best Newcomer Blog at the Vuelio Blog Awards in London last November. That really was surreal. I mean, I was in the shortlist so I knew I was in with a chance but actually when your name gets called out it’s crazy for the next few minutes as you whirl up onto the stage and collect your award. A fabulous experience  made even more poignant by the fact that I’m in my fifties and blogging… go the fabulous fifties club, hey?

Here’s me again acting up as usual with my eldest son, Dex who was my plus one for the evening.

So What Have I Learned In My First Year Of Blogging At Best Before End Date?

Here’s my tips although actually they are just as much about life as they are about blogging

  • Always be yourself. Authenticity is the foundation for everything. Don’t try to be somebody you are not. People, namely those you will want to read your blog, can see straight through bullshit.

  • There are always cheaters in everything and blogging is no different. The internet is awash every day about people who cheat to gain more followers to get work and/or ‘freebies’ {I’ll come back to this word}. I’ve seen them myself. I like to sleep sweetly at night and I bring myself back to point 1 .. authenticity.

  • That word .. ‘freebies’. I’ve had some lovely opportunities since I started this blog and I hope for many more to come but don’t confuse the word ‘freebies’ with ‘opportunities’. Nothing in life is free. Yes I know I’m not working down a coal mine putting in hard graft but my time isn’t ‘free’. This blog is currently a hobby .. a wonderful one, which if it turned into something I could make a living from would be awesome. Everything you see on this blog has taken lots and lots of my time. That’s my choice but it doesn’t make anything I receive or experience a ‘freebie’.

  • The world is full of lovely people. This little space has made it possible for me to meet some bloody amazing women. Some I haven’t even met in real life yet but I know that will happen. The support I have had from said women has been nothing short of making me very emotional sometimes. I know these wonders will be reading this .. you all know who you are.

  • Blogging is ‘new media’ and the world is still becoming acclimatised to it’s power and the influence it can wield when executed well. Just as we would once buy something because we saw it in a magazine or on the TV now we might just as well make that purchase because we saw it on on some one’s blog or social media channels. I know I do. It’s here to stay this influencing malarkey. The big takeaway  for me from this is that bloggers need to be transparent when something is gifted to them if we want this form of media to stay around. It’s not just part of a wonderful lifestyle they have managed to conjure up for themselves. Not honest and very phoney IMO.

  • I knew straightaway that Best Before End Date would be a lifestyle blog. I love fashion, I love beauty, I love trying new things, I can be opinionated so that’s me .. it all about my life. I hear so many bloggers say they don’t think they have a ‘niche’ but your ‘niche’ is you. You and your blog can be anything you want it to be. We are all unique.

  • It’s ok that once you are in this crazy online world that you are free to step out of it from time to time. Don’t put yourself under pressure to be ‘always on’. It will mess with you if you let it. Hats off to those who post on social media every day and have a continuous stream of Instagram Stories. I don’t know how they do it but it’s good to detox from everything once in a while. I’m a big lover of social media .. always have been .. I work in digital marketing .. but there has to be an off or pause button occasionally.

  • I hate that I know I have been passed over for opportunities because of my age. That’s changing, though … there is a tidal wave of change coming focussed around positive ageing. I despise discrimination in all it’s ugly forms. Let’s face it we have more money to spend now in this demographic at this stage in our life than we’ve ever had.. why would you ignore that if your business was savvy?

  • Care less about what people think and do your ‘thing’. As long as you aren’t hurting anyone then go for it. This has been a massive takeaway this year for me and has given my confidence a definite new lease of life.

  • Talk to your audience. I make it my mission to reply to each and every blog post, every comment on social media, every message … oh not the shady Instagram guys though .. no not those. I’d have double the followers I have now on there if I unblocked them all!!!! I sometimes worry that some woman somewhere will fall for the patter. Hey if you’re looking for your soulmate Mr Shade get yourself over to PlentyMoreFish dot bloomin’ com. OH MY LIFE!!! My kids think this is hilarious btw … Mr Bbed is not so sure!!

  • Everyone is in charge of their  own destiny. I take responsibility for everything I do and I own it. If there are people who don’t like my words or my opinions or how I look or what my home looks like they really don’t have to follow me. Don’t be mean. Build others up – don’t tear them down. And I’m not being holier than thou here .. I’m just striving to a better version of myself as I age. I’m not perfect but I’m trying. Mr Bbbed will read this and be chuckling to himself – ” Oh yes she’s very trying alright!!”

  • I like having fun. I like to use this blog as my platform to be able to talk about anything and everything but most of all I want to have fun. I never take myself seriously. Take my advice .. or maybe not .. what do I know?? Ha! Ha!

My One Year Blog Birthday Photo Shoot

It didn’t turn out quite the way I’d planned it in my head. It’s snowing on these photos and I’m wet and trying very hard for my teeth not to chatter! A lot turned out blurred because my photographer {my son} was shivering. You couldn’t make it up but I’m happy and hey I got a unicorn cupcake! That’s gotta be worth some blogging brownie points, hasn’t it?

Dress – Asos

Boots – Primark

Bag – A London boutique on my travels

Earrings – Next

Tights – M&S

Umbrella – Lulu Guinness

Sunglasses – Quay Australia

Here’s a better photo of my boots. It feels almost sinful to tell you that they were only £3.00 but they were. I was strolling through Primark in Newcastle last year and I side eyed just the one lone pair swinging nonchalantly in amongst a sea of slippers and I thought if they are a size 7 they are mine! Lol .. the rest as they say is history.

Hi lovely, and sending you great big happy 1 year blogging birthday wishes. What a year you have had too. As a fellow 50’s blogger, I’m in awe of your fab blog. It’s such an inspiration for us, err, more mature, and definitely pretty amazing bloggers! Love the tips and agree with them all. I once thought that my blog was a bit aimless and should have a niche, but when I suggested changing it my few followers made it clear that my blog is me and didn’t need changing. As I tend to waffle on in my posts, it made me think that it means that I must be an aimless, waffley sort of person in real life!
Have a lovely day celebrating and eating pretty celebration cakes. I’m pondering whether to write a post for my blog, but as my Me Room ( as I call my study) is freezing, I might just spend my day under a duvet instead! xxx

First off, those boots, so Gucci-esque and for 3 quid!!! Congratulations on your first year of blogging, you’re doing so well. At 48 I often think of giving up as feel I don’t have much to offer but then I give myself a slap and remind myself that I enjoy it and would so miss it if I didn’t do it anymore. Like you I’ve made many virtual friends, some of which I’ve met in real life and I find the ‘more mature’ blogging community amazing and so supportive. Keep doing what you’re doing!

Superb tips Sharon (better be careful how you read that) I will be looking forward to planning a meet up in the spring !?
    Love your style xxx

  11. February 13, 2018 / 9:25 am

Love your look in those pictures! Happy anniversary then lovely! I hope that I’ll be able to manage one year of blogging as well ahah. I do try to post everyday on Instagram, but I cheat a bit as I program most of it so I just have to post when I get the reminder, everything is already written and hashtagged ^^ And I completely agree with the “be yourself” I won’t be reading a blog if I feel like I’m being lied to, that’s why I still make lame jokes in my blog post ahah true to myself! \o/

  12. February 14, 2018 / 7:35 am

Happy 1st Sharon! One of many I’m sure. You are doing an amazing job here. I’m with you on the social media. I feel it can rule your life if you let it
