Beauty Products Tried & Tested | March 2018

My first ‘Beauty Products Tried & Tested’ of 2018 .. don’t kill me! Here we go …Beauty Products Tried & Tested March 2018

First up is …

  1. Marks & Spencer Absolute Time Capsules

For me these have been disappointing. I’ve used Elizabeth Arden Advanced Ceramide Capsules for about a year now and I love them. They seem to really give my skin the nourishment it needs at this stage in my life. I also had a little rant about brands on the post I reviewed Elizabeth Arden. Pop over and read that, too, if you fancy.

The only problem I have with the Elizabeth Arden capsules is that I can’t use them during the day. My base won’t settle and the serum seems to make it’s way into my eyes no matter how careful I am.

When I read about the M&S version in a magazine and saw some of my blogger friends use them I thought they would be worth  a try out.

They claim to:

“Supercharge your skin confidence with this course of 28 potent doses of anti-wrinkle active. Targets the stubborn wrinkles your normal cream misses.”

It goes on beautifully. I felt very hopeful after just the first capsule.I locked it in with my standard Aldi serum which I love and then my base is alway bareMinerals Complexion Rescue.

My experience is that they are not suitable for skin that is 50+. I think my skin is pretty good for my age at almost 55 but these capsules made my skin feel parched and and dry part way through the morning after application around 7.30am each day.

My mum who is 75 decided to give them a try at the same time. Her verdict was that she needed to use 2 each time to get enough serum for her face and neck. This can mean they don’t work out very budget friendly .. £50 per month. Not everyone can afford that and she also thought that they weren’t targeted enough for her older skin, either.

I definitely feel my Elizabeth Arden capsules have made a difference but the reason I persevered with them and kept repurchasing was because I noticed a difference right from month one.

Had my skin been 10-15 years younger I think The M&S capsules  would have been ‘enough’ to target those first wrinkles. They definitely haven’t made any difference in the first month of use so unfortunately I won’t be repurchasing.

2. Boots Lift Lighten Up Dark Spot Cream

I have what I can only describe as ‘celtic skin’ .. pale and freckly. As I’ve got older I also have lots of what I call ‘marks’. Not quite moles, not quite freckles, not quite tags .. just a pain in the arse to be honest and sometimes unsightly. I have loads on my legs. My GP says it’s from all the years as a child back in the day when our parents weren’t educated about sunscreen. When new marks crop up I periodically get them checked out and have had a couple removed.

It’s the reason I don’t really do the sun and also fake tan gets me down. Every brand I have ever tried simply makes them more visible. If you are reading this and  know of a fake tan brand that doesn’t do this please hit me up!

Anyway .. I was buying some bareMinerals products  in my local Boots and I spied this. I was on it. I’ve used it morning and night on some dark spots on my face until it has ran out.

The verdict? Sadly once again … not one iota of difference.

I’m thinking I need to try some skin whitening brand. I did once try something Japanese .. that long ago I can’t remember. Again, if anyone has any amazing results on dark spots please let me know because the only thing that is getting lighter here is my bank balance!

If you fancy a try of this particular dark spot cream yourself it’s only £8.66 on the Boots website… I’m sure I paid a bit more in store but I purchased a few items that day so maybe my memory isn’t serving me well. I seem to remember one thing about the Japanese product I once tried .. it was quite expensive.

3. Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate

This is a tiny sample. My eldest son who is a Kiehl’s addict gave me this to try. He said I would love it. This sample size lasted me about a week’s worth of evening applications in place of my beloved ceramide capsules.  He was right I did love it. I’m not sure I woke up younger  looking as it states on the brand’s website but if definitely gave my skin good hydration overnight.

4. Primark Makeup Remover Cloth

See this pink cloth my products are sitting on? I follow beauty guru, Nadine Baggott on Instagram and one night I hopped over to her Youtube channel and she was showcasing this  cloth from Primark.

She said it would be the

‘best £1.50 you can ever spend’

so I thought I would test it for myself. I use Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish to remove my makeup and have done for years along with the recommended muslin cloth. My only gripe is always that whenever I have had a full face of makeup on including lashings of YSL mascara that the eye makeup is never fully removed. I always look like I’ve slept in a full eye the morning after!

This little piece of magic though removes every bit and even just with water! I don’t know how it works .. it’s something to do with the volume of microfibres. It’s meant to emulate the ‘Original Makeup Remover’ at £14.99 available at Amazon. I have no reason to fork out fifteen quid now that’s for sure. My skin feels squeaky clean. I just need to stock up now.

Thanks to Nadine for that .. she is a the fountain of all beauty knowledge.

6.Revolution Blush Palette Blush Queen

I’ve seen the Revolution brand everywhere and I’ve got to be honest I bought this palette because of its prettiness more than anything. Having said that I’ve been really enjoying using it and it’s quickly replaced the Next makeup version I’ve been using for a couple of years. I particularly like the highlighter shades. If you haven’t discovered the brand yet you can find it at Superdrug and it’s all so purse friendly, too. I’m going to try some more items from the range over the Summer.

7. Ultimate Carbo Coco Teeth Whitening Kit

I was gifted this to try. I was intrigued when  Carbon Coco contacted me. From their Instagram account it appears a very popular product. I can remember using a charcoal based toothpaste years and years ago so I thought I’d accept their offer.

My teeth aren’t the greatest shade so anything that can up the whiteness ante sounds good to me.

They are an Australian brand but don’t let this deter you … products ship and arrive quickly. At least mine did from Australia to UK.

First off you wet the supplied toothbrush and dip it in the powder tooth polish. I followed the instructions that come with the kit. I think I went overboard to begin with and made a right mess. It’s as black as night as you would expect from a charcoal based product. Second time less powder .. lesson learned. However, no matter how little I used I  still made a mess. I took more time cleaning my sink each night which kind of put me off .. what a hassle. Plus, no matter how well I rinsed  my mouth it seemed to take ages to rinse clear. Although it’s scary looking it doesn’t stain you but it gets everywhere else!

I’m not adverse to cleaning but this took my cleaning to a new level. I was cheesed off how much I had to clean up after myself just to try and get whiter teeth! I wouldn’t have time to do this on a morning .. the clean up would make me late for work!

The toothpaste is the easy part. I used it with my electric toothbrush, though.

My teeth and gums actually felt way cleaner than brushing with my regular Colgate. One of my sons actually commented;

“Your teeth look white, what are you using?” so that’s gotta be validation for a product hasn’t it?

However, it does only seem to be a temporary whiteness not a build up of my teeth becoming whiter. They soon looked the same again.

I’ll probably use this up over time but because of the mess involved {maybe it’s just me that’s messy .. eek} I’m not likely to repurchase off my own back.

I’d love to hear from you in the comments if you have any experience of using any of the beauty products I’ve tried. Or tweet me at @MrsBbed to let me know about anything new you think this 50 plus bod needs to know about. xo

The Carbon Coco toothpaste in this post was gifted to me to review. For more information on my disclosure policy please read here.

Thanks, Anna. It’s all subjective isn’t it and skincare is so personal … a bit like our fingerprints! Overall the Elizabeth Arden capsules have definitely been one of my best finds of recent times. xo

I’m with you on the black charcoal powder. Disaster. Frightening but Whitening I called it. Rarely use it because it gets everywhere. Like the sound of the cloth. The only thing I swear by is to drink plenty of water and exercise, and my dirty bastard kale smoothies. I always see the best results when I’m sweating it out at the gym regularly. Because I sleep better too. I don’t stick to any particular product. The only item I absolutely swear by is Elizabeth Arden (read that article too) 8 hour cream. Never leave home without it.

I sleep like a log .. thankfully the menopause hasn’t affected that! Exercise and water are always the top key indicators for health .. just wish I stuck to both more. I’ve done the kale smoothies before .. I never last. From the inside out and all that ha! Thanks for stopping by hun xo

Oh, and I’ve been (sporadically) using Skinwoof. I haven’t noticed a huge difference (as often may be the case if you see your face everyday) but my friend was raving about my skin last weekend. And I haven’t been sticking to my water, juicing and exercise regime lately x

I haven’t been into good old Primark for a while. I do love a shop day in there! I’m going to look out for the cloths for sure but I’m now wondering if my microfiber dish cloths will do the same!

I know someone did ask Nadine the same question, Laurie and believe it or not although the tech is the same the microfibres are thicker in the regular cloths. So no dishcloths 😉

I love that Kiehls stuff – it is amazing. I also recommend the Ren stuff for sensitive skin – I really rate their cleanser, used as a two step with micellar water first it is very gentle and effective. I am going to investigate the Primark cloth however – that sounds excellent – I have really sensitive pale skin that comes out in random rashes and does inexplicable blotchiness when it gets such a whim so I am always keen to find something that wont give it any excuse.
