Resting Grinch Face, Simple Midlife Skincare & Managing The Menopausal Itch

Yes I’m talking about holiday skincare in December. I think because we had a holiday in the sun so late in the year I am still in holiday mode and can’t seem to switch seasons and get into the Christmas cut and thrust. I’m feeling like The Grinch not for the first time I might add. I think I would much prefer to escape to the sunshine again and forget about Christmas.

Pass me the holiday brochures!

You might remember if you are a regular reader that I was saving most of the contents of my Marks & Spencer Summer beauty box for my holiday. I am here to report that I loved everything apart from the Autograph Radiance Highlighter … but I sort of knew that somehow before I tried it. I used it on my shoulders and shins but I wasn’t that impressed.

I AM IN LOVE with the Emma Hardie Vitamin C cream. That and the Jane Scrivner Intense Oil I bought before I went. You might remember that I was lucky enough to get a 6 month trial of Lumity supplements and facial oil. I’d been looking for something as good at a fraction of the price because I just can’t commit to the hefty price tag. I am very impressed with the Jane Scrivner oil and I have recently repurchased.

It really was a holiday of being happy about having a small number of beauty products with me that for once were THE RIGHT products for me. Only took me how many years to reach this stage?

It was also perfect timing to be asked to work with Balneum and try out their range of products specifically designed for dry skin and relieving itchiness. Again, if you follow me on social media you will know that I’m always going on about my itchy skin. I’ve been told it’s menopausal. Yes, another bloody symptom to add to the list 🙁

UPDATE: menopause symptoms are well under control at the moment.

Itching constantly can make you feel so down in the mouth. I literally cannot use any of my once favourite body creams or lotions. Forget fragrance layering. Noooo way 🙁

Pre Balneum: Taking my trousers off of an evening used to be like a snowstorm on the bedroom carpet! Just what is it about lower legs and their dryness as you get older? And don’t get me started on their inability to tan {more on that later}.

I love the feel of the Balneum lotion on my skin  .. a very silky consistency and no horrid smell in fact, to my nose, no smell at all which meant a big plus straight off. This meant I could use my favourite Esteé Lauder Bronze Goddess fragrance and it not be aromatically compromised. I love a good hashtag and Balneum’s is a good one if itchy gets you down …

I loved it so much from day one that guess what? I started to use it in place of aftersun. Yes, it was good enough for that so was scoring on more than one level. A real multi tasking product.

Onto tanning. I’m not that bothered about a tan, to be honest. I usually sit under the parasol most of the day. But this holiday the stars aligned. The weather in Lanzarote was a perfect 27-29 degrees with a wonderful breeze. A breeze that was made for menopause midlifers just like me!

We’d also been introduced to another product in the form of Calypso Clear Spray. I used SPF30 the whole week. It literally sprays  from any angle and even upside down. I love it!!!

This is the first holiday EVER that {and I really do mean this as it’s significant to me}

  • I didn’t burn AT ALL. Not even my shoulders OR nose. Thanks Calypso.
  • I actually achieved a nice sun kissed tan which is unheard of for me and this  made me very happy … even on my ‘blue tone’ lower legs!!! Thanks again Calypso
  • I didn’t peel.  The added advantage was my itching stopped. Thanks to Balneum.
  • I wore hardly any makeup apart from my bareMinerals tint and my Max Factor Ruby Tuesday lippie. I had SVS Lashes treatment {not to be confused with LVL}  just under a week before we left so no mascara was necessary.
  • My pigmentation marks on my face did NOT change. This was HUGE for me. In fact, I’d go so far as to say they have even diminished.  I know!!!!! Thanks Jane Scrivner and Emma Hardie.

Having a small arsenal of powerful products with me on holiday that really suited me meant my skincare regime was super easy. I was even ready to go out most evenings before Mr B and that is a first!

I’ve talked about having a resting Grinch face before but having my ‘summer holiday’ so late on has really shifted something in me. I don’t know where I want to be. Certainly not putting the decorations up. I did manage a bit at the weekend … I was testing out my first artificial tree.

I’d rather be on holiday

Oh Sharon I get you! I am definitely a sunshine girl and Christmas time isn’t my favourite time of year – until I hit December (now!) and i start to soften towards it a little! Love your choice of holiday products and I’m off to Bali after Xmas (yay!) so will check them out! Have a lovely Xmas – but I’m sure we will speak online before then. ??

I think it’s that age old thing that happens to those of us who have kids, Lisa … it’s just not the same once they grow up! I am so jealous to hear that you are off to Bali. I’ll look forward to all the updates on that. I’ve never been. Have you got room? 😉 xx

I have eczema, so I totally feel you on the dry skin issue thang. I call it my eczema dragon, as long as you keep it in its cave with the right skincare, things are fine. Once it comes out of the cave, it is totally out of control and so hard to get back in the cave. It sounds like Balneum is working for you! It was recommended to me by my doctor, so it is in my arsenal of eczema skincare. xx

I have dry skin which has definitely got worse with age. I have been using Doublebase gel for quite a while, which I get from the doctor. Balneum sounds like a great alternative product to try.
I’m with you on the holiday front. We haven’t had a holiday since June and I don’t think we’ll last until Spring so looking for some sun in February – hopefully it’ll happen. xx

Oh my goodness – you look so healthy and glowing on your holiday, I would never have guessed you were having the skin issues of menopause (talk about a total kicker), I get weird little acne that leave keloid scars all over my legs – hideous, hideous and hideous. Nobody talks about these things happening – we find out for ourselves, assume we are the only weird and oddball little one and it’s miserable, even finding someone with similar misery is a comfort – which is a pretty sad state of affairs. I will have to go and investigate the skincare tips as honestly my legs have never been a good feature, but now – crikey… I have finally started HRT, so things are looking up. I am now no longer so emotional and bitey but I almost miss that as a super power as I have mellowed out. And I don’t think it is Grinchy to not be ready to do the Christmas thing yet – I have little lead up celebrations to get in the mood (flannelettemas – the flannelette duvet cover changeover celebrations, it’s a thing), Gin-mas (new bottle of gin and a trip out for a cocktail at Gin71)…. this weekend might be faceslap-packmas or in other words using of much hoarded samples to make way for new face treats, seriously you can’t just go full tilt at Christmas without building strength and doing other festivals

I totally understand what you mean about a late holiday. This year we did a longer holiday in June and I have really missed that lovely late holiday boost to skin and mood. It does make it hard to get into the Christmas spirit though. One day I would love to try a Christmas holiday. I will be looking out for the Calypso spray for our next holiday. Great to hear your symptoms are under control, hope it stays that way for a lovely Christmas. x
P.S. like the lady who commented – I also get those horrible dry scars on my legs, makes them so dry and look so unsightly! Might try the Balneum to help.

Sometimes the easiest of creams can be the best can’t they Sharron? I’m going to recommend this fr one of my children that has eczema. Fingers crossed it will work. No tree here as of yet on the building site either! xx
