I feel as if I must be the Valentine grinch here when I say this but I hate Valentine’s Day!
There – I’ve said it. It’s out. Am I alone in admitting it?
Romance is so much more than one day in the year. I’ve been spoiled througout my 31 year relationship with Mr Bbed because he is romantic everyday. Not in the traditional ‘bringing me flowers home’ kind of way and I do undertand that everyone categorises romance in different ways. Then again I’ve never had to wade through a room full of red roses so maybe I don’t understand that cupid arrow pinging stuff to it’s maximum intensity.
Anyone can have a great time romantically when the sun is shining but what about when the rain clouds darken your sky? It’s about the small stuff every day at least that’s my version — what I think is a real version of romance and love.
Here’s what my experience of romance is and long may it reign…
- He brings me my cup of tea in bed every morning – 7 days of the week.
- At weekends he makes me scrumptious breakfasts and never complains about how long I lie in — sometimes I do lie in sometimes I don’t.
- He makes sure I’m on the inside whenever we are walking along a road together. Old skool I know.
- Wherever we are and whatever we are doing he always puts my needs first and makes sure I’m happy.
I think he must’ve learned very early on in our marriage – ‘ Happy wife — Happy life’!!
I do the same for him — well he says in my head I think I do. What I am good at though and I’m sure he would agree if he was asked is picking places to visit and surprising him with unusual ideas of things we should do. That’s my forte. I just don’t use this particular super power for Valentine’s Day.
It’s not that I’m tight either far from it — I have holes in my pockets when it comes to spending on treats and I’m not saying Mr Bbed and I haven’t exchanged gifts on Valentine’s Day because we have. We sometimes send cards — I prefer apt and humorous to soft and squishy. We’ve partaken of the odd M&S Valentine Dine In For Two Meal. The Valentine grinch in me can’t bear being ripped off at restaurant price hikes around this time of the year. Check it out — it sounds lush this year and excellent value as usual.
If I was to buy a gift or receive one for that matter one of my favourite shopping destinations is Not On The High Street. Here’s some of my favourites this year. You’ll find them all under their Valentine’s Day gift category.
