What I Packed For An Autumn European City Break | My Style

What-I-Packed-For-A-European-City-Break

We recently had a five day break to Barcelona. Every time I have to pack I have a throwback memory of what it used to be like when we were packing for the kids. Oh, the early days of when they were toddlers and we had to find every place we could for stuffing Pampers nappies! Time and again we used to say we would buy stuff where ever we were going but with experience it wan’t always that easy. I don’t know about you but I was fanatical about their outfits and them being super smart boys for their evening stroll out and dinner. How planes ever take off never ceases to amaze me.

These days getting ready for trips is much less stress. Although, if we ever go anywhere as a family like our trip to Northumberland last Twixmas then it’s just like old times to get out of the door and on the road.

Back to me and how easy it is these days. I just have to worry about myself. I let Mr B sort himself out. He’s more than capable.

I Thought I’d Share With You What I Took With Me

We knew that our hotel was a few stops on the Metro outside of the city centre. Armed with that information we decided that we would stay out each day, all day. As it was a sightseeing break I wanted to be casual and comfortable but smart at the same time. Barcelona was always going to be warmer than North East England and looking at our weather app I knew it was going to feel like a mild Spring day there. Your perception of hot and cold might be different to mine but I’m a Northern girl remember and I’m menopausal!

I’m a midsize girl – a UK size 16 and 5′ 7″ – I like comfort especially when I know that I’m going to be living n the same outfit for a fair few hours.

What Was In My Case?

I find with a trip like this if I start with a coat as I knew given the weather forecast I would be wearing that every day. I wanted a pop of colour as I wear and love black. Introducing my bright red Wallis coat. I bought it a few weeks prior to my trip and I’d already worn it such a lot and I love it. It’s currently on sale now .. typical.

On me …

My Primark red suede boots from last Winter that despite being cheap as chips still look good and are very comfy. People always ask me about these.

The trainers are from New Look. I’m so glad  the choice of trainers both high street and designer has really improved. They look great with dresses, too. This pair you see on me in my pics are from New Look. They tick all the boxes for me … comfortable and stylish and a touch of the beloved animal print. I’ve never found them online. They were only £22.99. I think they have a hint of Balenciaga about them. They are like slippers. I like that I mention Balenciaga and slippers in the same breath  don’t you? ha ha!!

2 x black sweaters – the mohair with pearls in main picture  is last Winter from Next and a black M&S roll neck {this is staple I buy every year}

1 x emerald green sweater old from Dorothy Perkins but this is the closest I could find. More about the pop of colour than anything.

1 x orange sweater with glittery angel wings on reverse.  This is quite old but has really lasted well. It was from Designer Desirables. I’ve shopped here for quite a few years. It’s the sort of online store that I have to sift through as a lot of it isn’t me but they always have an unusual and quirky choice of knitwear. I don’t think I’ve ever bought anything other than jumpers from them but service is really good and even standard delivery really quick.

2 x jeggings { 1 dark rinse and 1 black with silver side piping. I always buy jeggings from Next. I love their fit on me}, 1 x animal print leggings and my favourite frill bottom trousers from Top Shop  bought last Winter. Similar here but without the frill.

The animal print leggings from M&S .. gorgeous quality for the price and sizes going in and out of stock all the time so grab if you like.

I love this tunic top from JD Williams. It’s got the obligatory pockets. Win win! Everyone loves posing pockets! I really think JDW  are upping their game with their ranges. I would never have dreamed of shopping from there until recently.  Remember that dress? It’s still available 😉

The big stripey rainbow scarf is from Accessorize. It’s this season but I snapped it up early on in my local Outfit store as I had a feeling it would be one of those that would fly out. I was right. It keeps going in and out of stock online so another thing to buy now if you like the look of.

The leopard print scarf I bought in Barcelona from Stradivarius. I seem to think it was a bit cheaper there, though. I also bought the animal print earrings there.

My crossover bag was a life saver. I did take one other larger bag but that was only for travelling for hand luggage for my book, magazines etc; I always downsize my money and cards into this little blue leather purse you can see.  I can’t remember where it’s from but it’s beautifully formed and sized for the task in hand.

I nearly always wear simple stud earrings during the day. When I’m out all day like on this trip I keep a pair of my ‘big’ earrings in my bag.  I took my favourite red H&M ones. With a top up of red lipstick and a spritz of perfume it always revived me enough for another few hours towards the end of the day.

Sunglasses are my weak spot. I took three pairs. A pair I always take whenever I’m away from home are my Miu Miu ones. Mine are a few years old now. My kids always call me ‘extra’ when I wear them! They are a bit Dame Edna but I love that about them. Selfridges have a decent selection if you like quirky eyewear like me. If I was in the market for another pair I quite like these ..

I also took a bobble hat that you can see in the picture where I’m wearing my red coat. I’m glad I did. One of the days there was a rain shower or two. I bought my gem encrusted hat in Top Shop last Winter. This is the nearest I can find online this year.

So there you have it ..  mostly everything I packed for my trip not including underwear  and several pairs of black sparkly socks that I like to wear with the trainers.

Everything I took I was able to mix and match. I was pretty pleased with myself. So often I’ve taken way too much stuff that I don’t wear.

I managed to get it all in my carry on case and there’s not a better feeling than whizzing straight out of the airport and on your way is there?

I always had trouble with packing, to much and outfits that didn’t combine with each other. And then a blogger told me to choose a colour scheme! That was it!

It works doesn’t it when you pick a colour, Nancy? Mine was my red coat and it made the rest so easy. xo

The leggings and the JD Williams top look amazing on you. Barcelona is such a chic city – it looks like you fitted right in. (PS And coming from the north-east, I bet it was loads warmer than Northumberland in November!!!!)

It’s the first time I’ve ever got it spot on, Maria. As you can imagine that’s been a lot of packing over the years! Thankyou xo
